Spray Dried Coffee

Spray-dried coffee is made by removing water from brewed coffee using a spray-drying process. This process involves spraying a liquid coffee concentrate into a hot air stream, which evaporates the water and leaves behind fine coffee particles. The resulting powder is more stable and easier to transport than liquid coffee.

Manufacturers use spray-dried coffee to add a coffee flavor and aroma to a variety of food products. It is commonly found in baked goods like cookies and biscuits, as well as in powdered drink mixes, ice cream, and frozen desserts. Its powdered form makes it convenient for consistent flavor distribution.

Spray-dried coffee is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use as a flavoring agent. The FDA has not set specific upper intake limits for coffee flavoring. International bodies like JECFA and EFSA have evaluated coffee and caffeine, generally considering them safe at typical consumption levels. While coffee contains caffeine, which can have stimulant effects, these are usually mild at levels found in flavored foods.
