Vitamins & Minerals: Potassium Chloride

Potassium chloride is a salt that is chemically identical to sodium chloride (table salt), but it contains potassium instead of sodium. It occurs naturally in minerals and is also found in seawater and plants. It is manufactured by reacting potassium hydroxide with hydrochloric acid.

Potassium chloride is often used as a salt substitute in low-sodium foods, providing a salty taste with less sodium. It can also be used as a firming agent in some processed foods and as a nutrient supplement. It is commonly found in reduced-sodium processed meats, snacks, and seasonings.

Potassium chloride is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA when used as a nutrient supplement or salt substitute. It is an essential mineral that plays a role in maintaining fluid balance, nerve signals, and muscle contractions. The WHO has evaluated potassium chloride and considers it safe. While it provides potassium, which is beneficial for blood pressure management, excessive intake can be harmful, especially for individuals with kidney problems. Typical amounts in food are not expected to cause adverse effects.
