Water Enriched Wheat Flour

This ingredient is a combination of water and enriched wheat flour. Enriched wheat flour is produced by milling wheat grains into a fine powder, and then specific B vitamins (thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folic acid) and iron are added back to restore nutrients lost during processing. The water component provides hydration.

Manufacturers use this ingredient to provide structure, texture, and as a primary source of carbohydrates in many food products. It is commonly found in baked goods like cakes, brownies, and snack cakes, as well as in prepared wraps and burritos, where it forms the base of the dough or batter.

Enriched wheat flour is a staple food ingredient and is not regulated as a food additive by the FDA. The enrichment process is mandated by the FDA for certain flours to help prevent nutrient deficiencies. It is a primary source of dietary carbohydrates. There are no known adverse health effects at typical intake levels for the general population. Neither JECFA nor EFSA typically evaluate basic food ingredients like enriched wheat flour as food additives.
