Sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate are salts used together as preservatives. Sodium benzoate is made from benzoic acid, which occurs naturally in some fruits but is usually made synthetically. Sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate are permitted food additives in the US. The FDA lists them as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) when used according to good manufacturing practices. Both have been evaluated by international bodies like JECFA and EFSA. While generally considered safe at typical levels, some studies have explored potential links to hyperactivity in children when combined with artificial colors, though evidence is mixed and not conclusive.
