Red 3, also known as Erythrosine, is a synthetic food coloring. It is a cherry-pink dye derived from petroleum. It is manufactured through chemical synthesis.

Manufacturers add Red 3 to give foods a bright red or pink color. It is often found in candies, cereals, baked goods, and some beverages, including protein and muscle recovery drinks.

The FDA revoked the approval for Red 3 as a food additive in January 2025, with manufacturers having until January 2027 to comply. This decision was based on the Delaney Clause of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act because it was found to cause cancer in male rats, though the FDA stated this is not relevant to human risk. JECFA has evaluated Red 3 and set an acceptable daily intake. The state of California's Food Safety Act (AB 418) bans Red 3 in food from 2027.
