In the U.S., benzyl alcohol is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use as a food additive. It is also approved as a preservative in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Regulatory bodies like JECFA and EFSA have evaluated benzyl alcohol. At typical consumption levels, it is not associated with adverse health effects. However, very high doses can cause irritation or other effects.
