Carnosyn Beta-alanine

Carnosyn beta-alanine is a synthetic, non-essential amino acid. It is produced through chemical synthesis and is not naturally occurring in significant amounts in the human diet. It is commonly used as a dietary supplement ingredient.

Manufacturers add beta-alanine to sports nutrition products and energy drinks to potentially enhance athletic performance. It is believed to work by increasing muscle carnosine levels, which may help buffer acid buildup during intense exercise. It is most frequently found in energy drinks, protein and muscle recovery drinks, and sports drinks.

Beta-alanine is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA when used as a dietary ingredient. JECFA has evaluated beta-alanine and established an acceptable daily intake. Some studies suggest it may improve exercise capacity and reduce fatigue in athletes. However, a common side effect is paresthesia, a tingling sensation, which is harmless and temporary. Evidence regarding its long-term health effects at typical supplement doses is still developing.
