What it is

N-acetyl L-tyrosine is a modified form of the amino acid tyrosine. Tyrosine is naturally found in many protein-rich foods. This modified form is typically produced through chemical synthesis.

Why it's used

Manufacturers add N-acetyl L-tyrosine to foods and beverages, particularly energy drinks and supplements, often for its perceived cognitive benefits. It is sometimes included as a source of tyrosine, which is a building block for certain neurotransmitters.

Health notes

N-acetyl L-tyrosine is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use in food. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) has evaluated tyrosine and related compounds. Research on the specific health effects of N-acetyl L-tyrosine at typical dietary intake levels is ongoing, and evidence on its benefits is mixed.

Allergen info

N-acetyl L-tyrosine is not derived from any of the nine FDA major allergens. It does not contain gluten.
