Citric Malic Acid

Citric malic acid is a blend of two common food acids: citric acid and malic acid. Citric acid is found naturally in citrus fruits like lemons and limes. Malic acid occurs naturally in fruits like apples and cherries. Both are typically produced industrially through fermentation using specific microorganisms.

This blend is primarily used to provide a tart or sour taste, enhance flavors, and act as a preservative in a wide range of foods and beverages. It is frequently found in candies, sodas, jams, jellies, and baked goods.

Both citric acid and malic acid are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use in food. They are common components of human metabolism. International bodies like JECFA and EFSA have evaluated these acids and established acceptable daily intake levels. At typical consumption levels found in food, they are not associated with adverse health effects.
