Extracts Of Annatto And Turmeric

Extracts of annatto and turmeric are natural colorants derived from the seeds of the achiote tree (annatto) and the root of the turmeric plant. These plant parts are processed to isolate and concentrate their vibrant pigments, typically yellow to orange-red.

Manufacturers use annatto and turmeric extracts to add natural color to a variety of foods, providing shades from yellow to deep orange-red. They are commonly found in baked goods like cakes, cupcakes, and pastries, as well as in dairy products, snacks, and seasonings.

Annatto and turmeric extracts are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use as food colorants. Regulatory bodies like JECFA and EFSA have evaluated these natural colorants. At typical consumption levels found in food, they are not associated with adverse health effects. Research into the specific health benefits of compounds found in turmeric, like curcumin, is ongoing, but these are separate from their use as a food colorant.
