FD&C Red 40 Lake

FD&C Red 40 Lake is an insoluble form of FD&C Red 40, a synthetic color additive. It is produced by combining FD&C Red 40 with an aluminum substrate, which makes it suitable for coloring products where the dye needs to remain stable and not bleed.

This ingredient is used to add a red or reddish-orange color to a wide range of foods, especially those with low moisture or high fat content. It is commonly found in candies, baked goods, beverages, and snack foods.

FD&C Red 40 Lake is an FDA-approved color additive for use in food. JECFA has evaluated FD&C Red 40 and set an acceptable daily intake. EFSA has also evaluated it and set an acceptable daily intake. Some studies have suggested a link between synthetic food colors, including Red 40, and hyperactivity in some children, though the evidence is mixed and not all studies agree. In April 2025, the FDA announced a plan to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes, which includes Red 40.
