What it is

Instantized whey protein concentrate is a form of whey protein that has been processed to dissolve more easily in liquids. Whey is a byproduct of cheese production, and the concentrate is made by separating whey from milk solids and then drying it. The 'instantized' process typically involves adding an emulsifier like lecithin to help it mix smoothly.

Why it's used

Manufacturers add it to foods and beverages to boost protein content. It is commonly found in protein powders, meal replacement shakes, energy bars, and sports nutrition products. Its primary function is to act as a protein source.

Health notes

In the US, whey protein concentrate is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA when used as a food ingredient. It is a source of complete protein, containing all essential amino acids. International bodies like JECFA have evaluated whey protein, and EFSA has also reviewed its safety. At typical intake levels found in food products, it is not associated with adverse health effects for most people. Some individuals may experience digestive discomfort.

Allergen info

Whey protein concentrate is derived from milk, which is one of the 9 FDA major allergens. It is not a source of gluten.
