Magnesium Lactate

Magnesium lactate is the magnesium salt of lactic acid. It is produced when lactic acid, often derived from the fermentation of plant-based carbohydrates like corn or sugarcane, is reacted with a magnesium source. This process creates a white or slightly yellowish crystalline powder.

Manufacturers add magnesium lactate to foods and beverages primarily as a nutrient supplement to increase magnesium content. It can also act as an acidity regulator or firming agent. It is commonly found in powdered drink mixes, fortified waters, and some processed foods.

In the United States, magnesium lactate is Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use as a nutrient supplement and for other specified purposes. It is a source of dietary magnesium, an essential mineral. International bodies like JECFA and EFSA have evaluated magnesium salts, and they have established acceptable daily intakes for magnesium compounds. At typical intake levels found in fortified foods, it is considered safe.
