Sodium Benzoate & Potassium Sorbate As Preservatives

Sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate are salts used together as preservatives. They are produced synthetically through chemical processes and are effective at inhibiting the growth of mold, yeast, and bacteria in foods.

These preservatives are added to foods to extend shelf life by preventing spoilage. They are commonly found in acidic foods like salad dressings, mayonnaise, pickles, and some beverages.

Both sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA when used as preservatives. Regulatory bodies like JECFA and EFSA have evaluated these substances and established acceptable daily intake levels. While generally considered safe in typical food amounts, some studies have explored potential links to hyperactivity in children when combined with artificial colors, though evidence is mixed and not conclusive.
