Manufacturers add soluble fiber to foods primarily to increase their fiber content, supporting digestive health. It also functions as a thickener, stabilizer, and gelling agent, improving the texture and mouthfeel of products like yogurts, sauces, and baked goods.

In the US, many specific soluble fibers are recognized as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by the FDA or are approved food additives. Soluble fiber is known to help regulate blood sugar levels, lower cholesterol, and promote digestive regularity. JECFA and EFSA have evaluated various specific types of soluble fibers, often concluding they are safe for consumption and setting acceptable daily intakes where appropriate. Some individuals may experience mild digestive discomfort, such as gas or bloating, when consuming large amounts of fiber, especially if they are not accustomed to it.
