TBHQ To Maintain Freshness

TBHQ, or tertiary butylhydroquinone, is a synthetic antioxidant. It is produced through a chemical process involving hydroquinone and isobutylene.

TBHQ is added to foods to prevent oils and fats from spoiling, which helps maintain freshness and extends shelf life. It is commonly found in products with high fat content, such as snack foods, baked goods, and processed meats.

TBHQ is permitted for use as a food additive in the United States and is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA when used within specified limits. Both JECFA and EFSA have evaluated TBHQ and established acceptable daily intakes. Some studies have raised questions about its safety at very high doses, but regulatory bodies consider it safe at typical dietary levels.
