Turmeric Extractives

Turmeric extractives are compounds derived from the turmeric plant (Curcuma longa), a spice commonly used in South Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine. The active compounds, primarily curcuminoids like curcumin, are extracted using solvents or other methods to create concentrated forms.

These extracts are widely used as a natural yellow to orange colorant in foods like cheese, yogurt, butter, and baked goods. They can also contribute a warm, slightly bitter flavor profile, and are found in spice blends, sauces, and processed snacks.

Turmeric and its compounds, including curcumin, have been studied for various health effects, with some research suggesting antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The FDA recognizes turmeric as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) for use as a food colorant and flavoring. International bodies like EFSA have also evaluated turmeric and its extracts. Evidence on specific health benefits at typical dietary intake levels is still under investigation, and research is ongoing.
