Carageenan

Carrageenan is a food additive made from red seaweed. It is extracted from the seaweed using an alkali process to produce a white to yellowish powder.

Carrageenan is used as a thickener, stabilizer, and emulsifier in many food products. It helps give foods a desirable texture and prevents ingredients from separating, commonly found in dairy products like ice cream and yogurt, as well as processed meats and baked goods.

In the United States, carrageenan is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use in food. It has been evaluated by international bodies like JECFA and EFSA, which have also affirmed its safety for consumption. Some studies have raised questions about potential health effects, but regulatory agencies consider it safe at typical intake levels.
