Carnauba Wax And Red 40

Carnauba wax is a natural wax obtained from the leaves of the Copernicia prunifera palm, native to Brazil. It is harvested by drying the palm leaves and then beating them to loosen the wax. Red 40, also known as Allura Red AC, is a synthetic food coloring made from petroleum.

Carnauba wax is used as a glazing agent to provide a glossy finish, prevent sticking, and extend shelf life in foods like candies, chewing gum, and fruit coatings. Red 40 is added to foods and beverages to impart a bright red color, commonly found in candies, drinks, and desserts.

Carnauba wax is Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by the FDA. JECFA has evaluated carnauba wax and did not set a numeric limit, as it is poorly absorbed by the body. Red 40 is an FDA-approved color additive. JECFA and EFSA have both evaluated Red 40 and set acceptable daily intakes. Some studies have suggested a link between synthetic food dyes, including Red 40, and hyperactivity in some children, though evidence is mixed and the FDA states a causal link has not been established for the general population. In April 2025, the FDA announced a plan to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes, including Red 40.
