Copper Amino Acid Chelate

Copper amino acid chelate is a compound where copper, an essential mineral, is bound to amino acids. This binding process, known as chelation, helps improve the copper's stability and absorption. It is typically produced through a chemical reaction between a copper salt and amino acids.

Manufacturers add copper amino acid chelate primarily as a nutrient supplement to fortify foods and beverages. It is often found in products like protein shakes, meal replacement drinks, and other nutritional supplements where added vitamins and minerals are beneficial.

In the U.S., copper amino acid chelate is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA when used as a nutrient supplement. Copper is an essential trace mineral vital for various bodily functions. Regulatory bodies like JECFA and EFSA have evaluated copper and its compounds, establishing guidelines for safe intake. Excessive copper intake can lead to adverse health effects, but typical dietary levels from fortified foods are usually well within safe limits.
