Manufacturers use dark confectionary coating to provide a smooth, meltable, and often less expensive alternative to real chocolate. It's commonly found on snack bars, cookies, candies, and baked goods, adding a sweet flavor and a protective outer layer that helps prevent moisture loss.

Dark confectionary coating is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA when used as intended. The primary ingredients are sugar and fat, which contribute calories. Regulatory bodies like JECFA and EFSA have evaluated many of the individual components used in confectionary coatings. Evidence does not suggest adverse health effects from typical consumption levels of these ingredients.
