Extracts Of Annatto

Annatto extract is a natural food coloring derived from the seeds of the achiote tree (Bixa orellana). The seeds are ground and then extracted using oil or water to produce a yellow to orange-red liquid or powder.

Manufacturers use annatto extract to add a yellow to orange-red color to foods. It is commonly found in cheese-flavored snacks, popcorn, baked goods, and dairy products like butter and cheese.

Annatto extract is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use as a food coloring. It is not associated with significant health concerns at typical consumption levels. JECFA and EFSA have evaluated annatto extract and established acceptable daily intakes. Some individuals may experience allergic reactions, though this is rare.
