Guar Carob Bean Xanthan Gums

Guar gum, xanthan gum, and carrageenan are all types of soluble dietary fibers derived from plants. Guar gum comes from guar beans, xanthan gum is produced by bacterial fermentation, and carrageenan is extracted from red seaweed.

These gums are commonly used as thickeners and stabilizers in food products. They help improve texture, prevent ingredients from separating, and give foods a smoother mouthfeel. You can find them in a variety of items like dairy products, baked goods, sauces, and dressings.

In the U.S., these gums are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA when used as food additives. They are indigestible and can contribute to dietary fiber intake. International bodies like JECFA and EFSA have evaluated these gums and found them to be safe for consumption at typical levels. Some research suggests that high fiber intake can aid digestion, but there is mixed evidence regarding other health benefits.
