Red Color #40

Red 40, also known as Allura Red AC, is a synthetic color additive. It is manufactured from petroleum-based chemicals. It is one of the most commonly used food dyes in the United States.

Manufacturers add Red 40 to enhance the visual appeal of products, making them look more vibrant and appetizing. It is widely used in candies, soft drinks, baked goods, dairy products, and certain processed foods. Its primary function is to impart a red hue.

Red 40 is an FDA-approved color additive for use in food, drugs, and cosmetics. In April 2025, the FDA announced a plan to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes, including Red 40. Some studies have suggested a link between synthetic food colors, including Red 40, and hyperactivity in some children, though evidence remains mixed and not all studies have found a consistent link. JECFA has evaluated Red 40 and set an acceptable daily intake. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has also evaluated it.
