Refined And Deodorized Coconut Oil

Refined and deodorized coconut oil is a vegetable oil extracted from the meat of mature coconuts. The refining process removes impurities, and deodorization uses steam or other methods to remove natural odors and flavors, resulting in a neutral-tasting oil.

Manufacturers use this oil for its neutral flavor and high smoke point, making it suitable for baking, frying, and as a base for confectionery coatings. It is commonly found in snacks, baked goods, and candies where a neutral fat is desired.

In the U.S., refined coconut oil is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA. It is primarily a source of saturated fat. While some research has explored potential health effects of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) found in coconut oil, the overall health impact of coconut oil consumption is debated, with some studies suggesting potential benefits and others highlighting concerns related to its high saturated fat content. JECFA has evaluated coconut oil and set an acceptable daily intake.
