TBHQ As Preservative

TBHQ, or tertiary butylhydroquinone, is a synthetic antioxidant. It is a white to off-white crystalline powder. TBHQ is made through a chemical process involving hydroquinone and isobutylene.

Manufacturers add TBHQ to foods to prevent oils and fats from spoiling, which helps extend shelf life. It is commonly found in high-fat foods like baked goods, vegetable oils, and snack foods such as cookies, crackers, and fried snacks.

In the U.S., TBHQ is permitted as a food additive and is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA when used within specified limits. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) has evaluated TBHQ and established an acceptable daily intake. Some studies have raised questions about potential health effects at very high doses, but regulatory bodies consider it safe at typical consumption levels found in food.
