Manufacturers add silicon dioxide to powdered or granulated foods to prevent clumping and ensure a free-flowing texture. It acts as an anti-caking agent, absorbing moisture and keeping particles separate. It is commonly found in products like spice blends, powdered sugar, and instant drink mixes.

Silicon dioxide is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use as an anti-caking agent. International bodies like JECFA and EFSA have also evaluated it. At typical dietary levels, it is not absorbed by the body and passes through the digestive system unchanged. There is no evidence of adverse health effects from its use as a food additive.
