Annatto Extract

Annatto extract is a natural food coloring derived from the seeds of the achiote tree (Bixa orellana), a shrub native to tropical regions. The color is obtained by extracting the pigments from the reddish-orange coating of the seeds.

Manufacturers use annatto extract primarily to impart a yellow to orange color to various foods. It is commonly found in products like cheese, butter, snack foods, baked goods, and cereals.

In the United States, annatto extract is an FDA-approved food additive and is also generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for its intended use. Both the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have evaluated annatto extract and established an acceptable daily intake. While generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience allergic reactions, though these are considered rare.
