Annatto & Turmeric Extracts

Annatto and turmeric extracts are natural colorants derived from the seeds of the achiote tree (Bixa orellana) and the root of the turmeric plant (Curcuma longa), respectively. The vibrant yellow to orange-red colors are extracted using solvents like oil or alcohol, then purified and standardized for food use.

These extracts are primarily used to provide yellow to orange-red coloration in a wide variety of foods. They are found in dairy products, baked goods, snacks, and processed meats, offering a natural alternative to synthetic dyes.

Annatto and turmeric extracts are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use as food colorants. Both have been evaluated by JECFA and EFSA, with no specific numerical limits set for their acceptable daily intake. While generally considered safe, some individuals may experience mild allergic reactions, though these are rare. Research into the health benefits of turmeric, particularly its active compound curcumin, is ongoing, but these benefits are not typically associated with the low levels used for coloring.
