Candy Coated Confection

Candy-coated confections are small, often brightly colored pieces of candy. They are typically made by coating a center, such as a nut, seed, or chocolate, with a sugar shell through a process called panning. This process involves repeatedly tumbling the centers in a rotating drum while adding layers of sugar syrup and color.

Manufacturers use candy coatings to add sweetness, color, and a crunchy texture to foods. They are commonly found in trail mixes, snack foods, and as decorative elements on baked goods. The coating also helps to protect the center from moisture and damage.

Candy coatings are primarily composed of sugar and are therefore a source of calories. Excessive consumption of added sugars is linked to health concerns such as weight gain and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. Regulatory bodies like the FDA permit the use of common ingredients in candy coatings. International bodies such as JECFA have evaluated many of the individual ingredients used in candy coatings.
