Methyl and propyl parabens are preservatives commonly used in food and cosmetics. They are synthetic chemicals that occur naturally in some fruits, but are manufactured for commercial use. They work by preventing the growth of mold, yeast, and bacteria.

Manufacturers add methyl and propyl parabens to foods to extend shelf life by inhibiting microbial spoilage. They are often found in baked goods, snacks, and processed foods where microbial contamination is a concern.

Methyl and propyl parabens are approved for use as preservatives in the U.S. by the FDA. Both the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have evaluated parabens. While generally recognized as safe at typical levels, some studies have raised questions about potential endocrine-disrupting effects, though regulatory bodies have not established upper intake limits based on these concerns.
