Organic Annatto Extract

Organic annatto extract is a natural food coloring derived from the seeds of the achiote tree (Bixa orellana). The seeds are ground and then extracted using oil or a solvent to produce a yellow to orange-red colorant.

Manufacturers use organic annatto extract to add a yellow to orange-red hue to foods. It is commonly found in cheese products, baked goods, snacks, pasta, and processed meats.

Organic annatto extract is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use as a food coloring. It is not known to cause adverse health effects at typical consumption levels. International bodies like JECFA and EFSA have evaluated annatto and its derivatives. Evidence does not suggest significant health concerns associated with its use as a food colorant.
