Sulphur Dioxide Added

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a gas that occurs naturally in small amounts. It is often made by burning sulfur. In food, it is typically added as a salt, like sodium sulfite or potassium metabisulfite.

Sulfur dioxide and sulfites are used as preservatives in many foods. They help prevent spoilage by inhibiting the growth of bacteria, yeasts, and molds. They also act as antioxidants, preventing browning in dried fruits and vegetables, and can be used to keep wine from oxidizing.

Sulfur dioxide and sulfites are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA when used as preservatives. However, some people are sensitive to sulfites and may experience allergic-type reactions, such as asthma symptoms. The FDA requires foods containing more than 10 parts per million of sulfites to declare them on the label. JECFA and EFSA have evaluated sulfites and established acceptable daily intakes.
