Citric Acid And Silicon Dioxide

Citric acid is a weak organic acid found naturally in citrus fruits. It is commercially produced by fermenting a sugar source, such as corn or sugarcane, with a specific strain of mold (Aspergillus niger). Silicon dioxide, also known as silica, is a naturally occurring compound found in sand and quartz. It is manufactured for food use by reacting silicon tetrachloride with oxygen.

Citric acid is used as a flavoring agent to provide a tart taste and as a preservative to extend shelf life. Silicon dioxide is used as an anti-caking agent, preventing powdered ingredients from clumping. They are often found together in seasoning mixes, marinades, and frozen meals.

Citric acid is Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use in food. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have evaluated citric acid and found it safe for consumption. Silicon dioxide is also GRAS. Both are consumed in small amounts and are not associated with adverse health effects at typical dietary levels.
