Freshness Preserved By BHT

Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) is a synthetic antioxidant. It is made from petroleum-based chemicals. BHT is used to prevent foods from spoiling by reacting with oxygen.

BHT is added to foods to prevent fats and oils from becoming rancid, which can cause off-flavors and smells. It is commonly found in processed foods that contain fats, such as cereals, snack foods, and baked goods.

BHT is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA for use as a food additive. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have evaluated BHT. Some studies have raised questions about BHT's potential health effects, but regulatory bodies consider it safe at typical consumption levels. Research is ongoing, and evidence on long-term effects is mixed.
