Food Starch Modified

Food starch modified is a type of starch that has been treated physically, enzymatically, or chemically to change its properties. It is typically made from corn, wheat, potato, or tapioca. These modifications help the starch perform better in food products, especially under different processing conditions.

Manufacturers add modified food starch to thicken, stabilize, or emulsify foods. It can improve texture, prevent separation, and help foods withstand freezing, thawing, or heating. It is commonly found in sauces, soups, gravies, dairy products, baked goods, and processed snacks.

In the United States, modified food starch is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA. It is digested like regular starch and is not associated with adverse health effects at typical intake levels. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) has evaluated various modified starches and concluded that a numerical acceptable daily intake (ADI) is not necessary. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has also assessed modified starches and found them safe for use.
