Fish Unprepared/Unprocessed: Nutrition Facts and Calories
This category includes fresh or frozen fish products that are largely unprocessed, such as whole fish, fillets, and portions. These items are typically sold raw and require cooking before consumption. Examples include snapper fillets and other fish cuts. When choosing unprepared fish, the ingredient list is usually very short, often just the fish itself, or fish and water (used as a protective glaze for frozen products). You generally won't find added sugars or significant amounts of added sodium in these products. The FDA recommends a daily sodium intake of no more than 2,300 milligrams as part of a healthy diet. Fish is a good source of protein and often provides beneficial fats, including omega-3 fatty acids. While most fish are low in saturated fat, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (2025-2030) suggest limiting saturated fat intake to less than 10% of your daily calories. Check the Nutrition Facts label for protein and fat content. Choosing unprepared fish allows you to control seasonings and cooking methods, contributing to a balanced meal.
